Obituary for John "Jack" Cody

John "Jack" Cody
Dr. John (Jack) Cody passed away on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 with his wife and family beside him. He was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin on June 10, 1930 to the late James D. and Mary E. (Murphy) Cody. He graduated from Aquinas High School and then enlisted in the Navy during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he came back to La Crosse to further his education at La Crosse State College (now UWL), graduating with honors and playing both football and tennis. There he met his beloved wife Donna M. Morgan and they were married August 20, 1955, in Waupaca, Wisconsin.

Jack continued his education receiving a Masters from the University of Iowa, Iowa City and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. After completing his education, he took a position at the University of Indiana, Bloomington. He and Donna later moved to Carbondale, Illinois where Jack served as Professor of Educational Psychology at Southern Illinois University (SIU). During his 30+ years at SIU he became an Associate Dean of Education, Chairman of the Dept. of Educational Psychology, served as director of the Clinical Center and was appointed as the NCAA athletic faculty representative for SIU.

Jack also contributed greatly to his community, spending time as a Carbondale Junior Sports coach and board member for baseball, basketball and football, an active member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. He enjoyed physical and outdoor activities, especially teaching his children to fish and golf.

Jack and Donna just recently moved to Appleton, Wisconsin to be closer to family. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Donna (Morgan) Cody; his children: Lisa (Tom) Austin, Evergreen CO, Mary (David) Carrico, Paducah, KY, Thomas (Laura) Cody, Macomb, IL and Timothy (Sara) Cody, Appleton, WI; his grandchildren: Christopher Cody, Matthew Austin, Ryan Cody, Patrick Cody, Samantha Austin, Michaela Cody, Andrew Cody, Emma Cody and Claire Carrico. Jack is also survived by his sister Maxine (James) Kroner, sister-in-law Elaine Zywicki, brother-in-law Gary Morgan and several nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 am at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 1617 Pine St. Appleton, Wisconsin, on Monday October 2, 2017, with Rev. Dennis Ryan officiating. Visitation with the family will precede the mass from 9 am till 11am. Interment will be Wednesday October 4, 2017 at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Lanark Wisconsin. A memorial service will be held at St. Francis Xavier Church at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Francis Parish in Carbondale, IL or St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN.
